Insulation for Michigan Home

This article represents some general overview about the insulating materials and the methods employed in insulation in Michigan homes. Some of the insulations available in Michigan are as follows:

Cellulose Insulation: This is prepared from recycled newsprints as well as wood pulp. This is made safe to use as an insulating material by adding fire retardant and mold retardant chemicals to it.

Cotton Insulation: This insulation consists of around 75% of recycled blue jeans. Fire retardant chemicals are also found in this insulation.

Fiberglass Insulation: This is basically made from sand. Some of the fiberglass insulation contains traces of urea and formaldehyde.

Foam Insulation: It is classified into two sub types. The open cell insulation which is made up of soy and cementitious is prized 3.9 Rs. for an inch while the closed cell insulation which is made up of polyurethane and soy is prized 7 Rs. for an inch.

Rockwool Insulation: This is very dense insulation material and is usually the slag left out in the furnace.

Wool Insulation: This insulation is made fire resistant with the help of oil from the wool of sheep.

Reflective Radiant Barrier: This is the foil insulation which is mostly used in the south of Michigan. It is mostly used to reduce the amount of heat in the attic of the house.

Mushrooms Insulation: Now-a-days, mushrooms are also used as insulating material in order to put a step forward towards a green eco friendly environment.

There were many materials that were considered to be environmental friendly, later there were some of the materials found to be hazardous. Some of them are listed over here:

Vermiculite: This material used in insulation was found to be contaminated due to asbestos in the North American mines and Montana.

Urethane Foam: In this material at the times of house fires very toxic fumes were released and so this material was discontinued which used to be very popular in ‘70s.

Benefits of Insulation on Health

Michigan stands as one of the leading states in saving the energy. This state contributes 32% of the energy saving of the country. The benefits of insulation on health are as follows:

Clean breathing air

At the time of ‘70s most of energy companies insisted the use of polyurethane vapor retarder to make the home atmosphere clean. But due to this problems of molding aroused. As a result of this house wraps were used.

Ventilation

In the houses built during ‘60s the roof pitches were lower in height. As a result there were no spaces for attic vents. But later it was understood among all the architects to have the need of attic vents. Presently all the houses built today are having the ventilations in the attic which helps in the removal of warm air during summer.

Flammability

Some of the insulating materials are fire resistive as they as made up of such materials. Examples are the unfaced fiberglass and the Rockwool insulation. The other materials that do not resist the fire need an extra layer of fire resistive chemicals like the cellulose foam.

Hence the fire retardants are equally important and required to be used along with the insulation. But if you want a much better idea to save you money than it would be recommended to use the insulations that comes with fire resistive materials. Doing so will save your money as well as time of carrying out dual work.

In general insulation is the basic requirement of any house in Michigan and because of this only Michigan is considered as a state which saves 32% of the energy among the whole country.
